WE SOLVE VINYL WRAP ISSUES
WHY DO VINYL WRAPPED KITCHEN DOORS PEEL AWAY?
We often have customers asking this question. So, why do vinyl wrapped kitchen doors (also known as thermofoil) peel away? The answer is simple: they were made to peel. To further understand why they peel, you first need to understand why and how they were made.
How are Vinyl Wrapped Doors Made?
First a medium density fibre board (MDF) door is cut to the desired shape. A glue is then applied, and the vinyl is pressed against the MDF. This process is completed by machines that exert more force than a person is capable of.
Many years ago, the glue that was used in the manufacturing of vinyl wrapped doors was strong. It was long lasting, but it was also a harmful chemical. Nowadays, more environmentally friendly glue is used, but it’s not quite as strong anymore. As a result of this newer glue, modern vinyl wrapped doors begin to peel in only 5 or so years.
Why are Vinyl Wrapped Cabinets Popular?
Vinyl wrapped cabinets are very popular because they are a cheaper alternative to timber or 2-pac painted cabinets. They can also have recessing, a feature not available with melamine or laminate doors. Vinyl wrapped cabinets are a good short-term value only. Many new homes and units are constructed with vinyl wrapped cabinets, because they look nice and cost less than better quality cabinets. The problem is that they aren’t made to last longer than 5 to 7 years, so whilst they are a cheaper alternative, you do only get what you pay for.
How do you repair peeling Vinyl Cabinets?
Vinyl wrapped kitchen cabinets can’t really be repaired. Once the vinyl starts to peel away, it can’t be glued back onto the door. This is because of the way in which vinyl wrapped doors are manufactured, it’s impossible to fix them. When one cabinet begins to peel away, it’s quite likely that it’s an indicator that the rest are also going to start peeling soon.
There is only one real option to repair vinyl kitchen cabinets, and that is to professionally peel away all of the vinyl and then paint the underlying MDF. Not all professional painters and/or polishers are capable or have the necessary tools to do this. At Adelaide 2 Pac Kitchen Resurfacing, we have developed a professional technique that allows us to completely strip the vinyl away and paint the underlying MDF in a high quality two pac paint, leaving a finish so perfect that the doors will look brand new again. This process is only a fraction of the cost of completely replacing your cabinet doors.
Understanding the Wrong Advice
There are companies out there that will tell you they can paint over the vinyl. This should never be done. Painting over the vinyl will cause the thinners to penetrate through and will only speed up the peeling process. We do not suggest painting over vinyl wrapped doors.
We can’t take the vinyl off until it starts to peel. If we try, it can in fact potentially ruin the door. If your vinyl wrapped kitchen cabinets are starting to peel, contact us today and we can give you tips on how to speed along the process so your doors can be repainted with a professional 2 pac finishing, leaving them looking brand new again.
Kitchen resurfacing is not just limited to doors and drawers. Not only can Kitchen Cabinets be resurfaced, but Splash-Backs and Tiles can all be successfully given a new lease on life with this technique.
